Watch for the World

Augustine wrote that in this life we walk through traps and temptations.  Bernard said that life was a continual temptation.  Look around you:  The world is filled with objects which play to our senses.  Such things stir us so strongly that we sometimes cannot tell the difference between those things which we need and those things which we merely want.

Look at the danger which John writes of:

For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. (1 John 2:16, ESV)

Consider this list:  There is something for every – one.  Are a sensuous person?  There is the desire of the flesh.  Are you covetous?  There is the pride in possessions?  Are you self-consumed?  There is the pride of life.

Do you see what danger we are in?  The world is stuffed with traps laid out to match our indwelling sin; each object in the world is like an army round-about the city, laying siege and seeking to destroy.
