According to Bill Gillham, “the devil’s definition of a hypocrite is ‘anyone who acts contrary to how he feels.’ ”

That is, feelings are considered truth, so if one acts differently from how he or she feels, that person is a hypocrite. But Gillham reminds us that rather than those who act differently from how they feel, hypocrites are defined as those who act differently from who they are (1 John 3:1), no matter what they have experienced in the past.
