Adolf Hitler (13)

The great Athenian statesman and lawgiver, Solon (archon 594 B.C.), wrote to the people of Athens — after a man named Pisistratus became tyrant. His political advice is evergreen and always relevant:

Later, when you are suffering, don’t complain to the gods about your fate.

You raised these men, giving them pledges: because of that, you have slavery.

Each of you walks like a fox: but as a group you’re mindless.

You look to the tongue and to the word of a fawning man: but as to what’s happening, you don’t pay attention.

ὅτε δὲ τὸν Πεισίστρατον ἔμαθεν ἤδη τυραννεῖν, τάδε ἔγραψε πρὸς τοὺς Ἀθηναίους·

[52] ειʼ δὲ πεπόνθατε δεινὰ διʼ ὑμετέρην κακότητα, μή τι θεοῖς τούτων μοῖραν ἐπαμφέρετε.

αὐτοὶ γὰρ τούτους ηὐξήσατε, ῥύσια δόντες, καὶ διὰ ταῦτα κακὴν ἴσχετε δουλοσύνην.

ὑμέων δʼ εἷς μὲν ἕκαστος ἀλώπεκος ἴχνεσι βαίνει, σύμπασιν δʼ ὑμῖν κοῦφος ἔνεστι νόος.

Don’t throw it in the gods’ face, don’t blame the gods

ῥύσια δόντες,
giving pledges

rhusia is a pledge. The verb hints to an interesting connotation of the word:

ῥῡσῐάζω, f. άσω, (ῥύσιον) to seize as a pledge, to drag away, Eur.:—Pass. to be so dragged away, Id.
καὶ διὰ ταῦτα κακὴν ἴσχετε δουλοσύνην.
and through/by means of this evil you have this slavery
ἴσχω, a form of ἔχω only in pres. and impf. ἴσχον:

ὑμέων δʼ εἷς μὲν ἕκαστος ἀλώπεκος ἴχνεσι βαίνει,
