§. 4.

While she was troubled atthis saying, the Angel said unto her, Fear not Mary, for thou hast found favor with God. And behold, thou shalt  in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall giv unto him the crown of his Father David. And he shall] reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there shall be no end.[1]

I praise and magnify thy Name,

O Jesus, for thy great Glory and endless Sovereignty,

for as much as thy Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom[2],

and thy Dominion endureth throughout all generations[3].

O thou Root and offspring of David[4],

vouchsafe to extend thy Scepter over all Nations,

and be for Salvation to the Ends of the Earth[5],

that under thy Government all People[6]

being saved from their sins

may live and prosper in peace and holiness.

Sit upon the Throne of my heart

by the Power and Presence of thy Holy Spirit,

reign over all the faculties of my Soul[7],

subdue them to thy Will,

and be thou my God and King forever.

The prayer for a counterveiling force to the effect of sin”

(i.) It [sin] infects the soul in its chiefest faculties

(i.) It hath overspread the soul, and that in its most noble faculties; I mean those two which do so much advance man above the common sort of creatures,—reason and will, understanding and affections: the highest and inmost powers [which] poor man hath, are surprised by it.
